stellarwindBest Wishes gets points for having an awesome intro sequence with a song by Rica Matsumoto. It also gets points for having a fucking badass Mijumaru.
But it loses points for EVERY FUCKING THING ELSE.
So, first episode. Aside from pretty much nearly confirming that Delia and Oak are totally together (Otherwise I really don't get why would ALL THREE OF THEM go to Isshu together and look very much like a family - although I get the feeling if anything is going on Ash is as oblivious to it as ever), Ash is retardedly excited about everything (I guess that would be understandable, new region, new adventure, all that cal).
Aaaaaaaaand that's when the failfest begins. CUE CONVENIENT LEGENDARY SIGHTING #1! In the form of a WTF stormcloud of doom which is Zekrom's 'Shadow' or somesuch bullshit. Said attacks Pikachu (Ash gets caught in the ID4-primary-weapon-esque-aura thing going on too) and somehow scrambles the thing's circuitry, which leads to a very embarrassing loss for Ash against Shooty, the new rival, who IS a complete fucking douche and is pretty close to Paul in the 'Biggest Jackass Ever' stakes. Said rival - who is also an actual newbie trainer (!!!) picked Tsutarja (which kinda shocked the potential starter Miju, who is stalking Ash ever since), which was, for a just-given starter PokeMon, WAY too fast and powerful than it should be right for the first battle, and knew Grass Mixer right off the bat. That's... Just plain wrong.
So. Shooty fucks off. Pikachu gets analyzed, then the fucking Zekrom stormcloud reappears, screws Pikachu all over again... Ash runs off to it again, POOF. Stormcloud clears. The Giant Electric Space Dragon has rendered his judgment and Pikachu was found worthy. Ash proceeds to show his excitement that his partner is okay by commanding said partner zap him. And then Volt Tackle him. And he's pretty happy about it before he collapses.
Very soon it is shown that Ash lost any single inkling of a brain he gained over four and a half regions and acts like a complete fucking n00b that never dealt with PokeMon before. Nevermind the fact he attempts to capture several PokeMon without even trying to weaken them first (even if the first PokeMon was a case of mistaken identity - he thought IRIS'S HAIR WAS A POKEMON. I shit you not), then proceeded to attack a random Mamepato... in the presence of its entire flock. Said flock proceeded to pwn Ash royally for his stupidity. He did get one in the end (A random straggler which he managed to defeat) but we all knew he was going to catch the starter bird. He ALWAYS does. >>;
Iris, by the way, continuously calls Ash a 'Child'. Which makes sense because he behaves the most childishly he's ever had, since the freaking Indigo season. She's also ridiculously excitable, but seems a bit more, shall I say... Intelligent... than Dawn was. I guess the jury is still out on her degree of fail.
But the worst blow to the series is what happened to Team Rocket. For one, Team Rocket as a whole got a bit of a redesign, complete with a slick sinister new R logo. Giovanni is dressed up like he shops at Fashion For Fascists and he has a fucking secretary who looks even more sinister than he is. When the hell did Giovanni get a secretary?
And as for our terrible trio, not only they became all SRS BSNS (completely drained of their personality!), they lost their entire team. All of their PokeMon. Left them at the HQ. And when they wanted them back aforementioned secretary states that they can't have them back because they have to blend in with the people of this region who have never seen these PokeMon before (You know, because walking around in black uniforms with Rs emblazoned on them isn't suspicious at all). Even Meowth wonders wtf (Because he's not an Isshu PokeMon either, lol). Jessie catches a Koromori, but that's off-screen.
But the worst is still ahead. They don't have the Meowth balloon anymore. They get a black blimp with the new stylized sharp slick corporate logo R instead... and after the failblimp gets popped by THE MOST BADASS MIJUMARU EVER, Ash sends Pikachu over to Volt Tackle them...
... And they escape with a smoke bomb.
THEY ESCAPE.
WITH A MOTHER FUCKING.
SMOKE.
BOMB.
THEY AREN'T BLASTING OFF.
WHAT THE FLYING FUCK IS THIS SHIT!?!?!?!?
Whatever this is, this is not PokeMon anymore. Honestly, If they wanted to reboot the series so bad (to the point all the characters get a complete personality re-write) they really should have used completely new characters. Nothing stops them from using a new lead with a Pikachu. He could even be a Pallet Town kid. He could even look like Ash. But... They didn't.
They just took all the characters... And destroyed them. Completely.
Admittedly this IS just the beginning of the series, and somewhere along the way they COULD realize that the characters are so ridiculously OOC this has got to be a fucking Dream World incarnation of the PokeMon World. But right now... This is bullshit.
But at least the intro is pretty.

Date: 2010-09-24 02:54 pm (UTC)I can't believe what they did to TR, tho. Making them give up Mime Jr., Seviper, and Wobb? That's just plain wrong. James doesn't even seem that heartbroken by it and he loved Mime Jr. to pieces! D: I get why the writers decided to get rid of their Pokemon, but how they did it just seems so contrived and cheap. At least Jessie's already caught a new Pokemon.
I'm not fully convinced yet that TR won't return to their usual ways after the first few initial episodes, so I'd just wait for a bit and see. I don't mind their characters being a bit darker-ish, and the new TR logo is pretty smexy, but I'd hope they'd at least keep their goofy/lovable personalities.
