Rant of the Day.
Dec. 8th, 2003 11:15 pmI do realize it's not easy to maintain web servers.
I DO realize that it's a costly process that requires time and money.
I *DO* realize that as they're doing us a favor for letting us host our websites for free, and that we should logically shut up and take whatever crap they try to put us through...
But I entirely fail to realize why the flick do people care about money more than they do about their users.
A long time ago there was a webhost called Crosswinds. They were just about anything you could wish for in a webhost. Free, nearly unlimited, a touch slow, but otherwise reliable. There were no banner ads. No popups. Nothing.
It all went to hell in a handbasket.
First, they started by placing a single popup ad, and that was it. And we were content because it wasn't THAT intrusive. Then followed a chain of events that eventually led to the utter demise of the Crosswinds free hosting program.
It seems that now, in an age where no good webhost is free, no free webhost is good and nothing that's free and good is a webhost, the only remaining webhost that was actually somewhat good, Netfirms, Seems to be headed in a Crosswinds-esque downward spiral that might eventually lead to THEIR free hosting program going keput.
In this world, where there are people who make money by adding random people's e-mail adresses onto SPAM mailing lists (Alas, there is no escape from mail advertisements, even online!), webhosts close their gates, forums are besieged by 10-year-old kiddies, and various groups whom shall not be named remove more and more of their free members' priveledges and pass them on to 'subscribers only' (although I can understand some of them, I still don't approve. Maybe because I'm one of the people who have what to lose from this. Call me selfish, but I still find it to be fucked up), It is clear that soon enough, the only thing that will remain on this Internet that is worth using would be Instant Messengers. And god knows how low will THOSE be kicked eventually.
As in the case of reality, the Internet is slowly being taken over by corporations who care about nothing but themselves. And as the few who don't are slowly going the same way, I think it's quite safe to say....
It's Official. The Internet has Gone to Hell.
